The Poet's Petard -- March 2021

Today the subject is "The Soul."

I've always had trouble distinguishing between "soul" and "spirit," and quotes like this can offer some help if this is also an issue for you.
Or, not.
"You can survive only in a new self,
but your former self is your soul,
and you do not have another."
~Andrei Bitov
(from his incredibly quirky and wonderful travel essay book
A Captive of the Caucasus: Journeys in Armenia and Georgia)
AND
I toss in as an afterthought, a chapter heading from Václav Cílek's To Breathe With Birds :
The Man with the Soul of a Moose and
the Moose with the Soul of a Moose

What an intriguing distinction to make! Thanks! The Bitov quotation didn't/doesn't work for me, alas, but then I realized that the book's title starts with the "captive," which makes a world of difference. The moose lines are pure delight!

I like them both, soulfully. And may I say that it's refreshing to read something by an actual Caucasian, as opposed to your usual (but usually mislabeled) Euro-American!
